Hey friends here’s a list of some books the vet community has recommended for aspiring vet students :)!
I received a bunch of lovely comments and emails from aspiring vet students at primary school level, asking for vet book recommendations, so here we are! I’ll aim to update this list often so feel free to check back and see what’s new here 🙂 If you have any suggestions as well please comment below or pop something into the contact form, I’d love to hear from you.
While applying for vet school, I was inspired by James Herriot’s book ‘All Creatures Great and Small: The Classic Memoirs of a Yorkshire Country Vet’, but I’ve been told that his books are now an outdated representation of the current veterinary profession, so I’ve listed a bunch of other books below,
- The Hippo with Toothache: Heart-warming stories of zoo and wild animals and the vets who care for them by Lucy Spelman & Ted Mashima
- The Secret Life of a Vet by Rory Cowlam
- All My Patients Have Tales: Favourite Stories from a Vet’s Practice by Jeff Wells
- Gillian Hick Vet Series 3 Books Collection Set – Vet on the Loose, Vet on a mission, Vet among the pigeons
- Vet on Call: My First Year as an Out-of-Hours Vet
- Horses, Heifers and Hairy Pigs: The Life of a Yorkshire Vet
- The Vet 2: the big wild world
- Listening to the Animals: Becoming The Supervet
- Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat: Why It’s So Hard to Think Straight About Animals (P.S.)
- My Family and Other Animals: The Corfu Trilogy 1
- Animal Ark 10 Books Set Collection By Lucy Daniels Inc Lost Kitten, Lonely Pony
A more scientific book I’ve been recommended by a vet friend is ‘The Complete Textbook of Veterinary Nursing, 2e‘.
Hope this list is helpful in getting you started on your vet journey. All the best!
May xx
